Lens thinning
Thin lenses: for lightweight but effective correction
Do you need optical lenses? Please note that their thickness will depend on the type of correction. The stronger the correction, the thicker and heavier the lenses. Thin lenses ensure perfect correction of your eyesight without putting weight on your nose.
Thinner, lighter lenses offer additional comfort. On the technical side, thinning can reduce the weight and thickness of untreated glass by an average of 40%. From a cosmetic point of view, the thinner the lens, the less distorted your eye.
What type of lens thinning should I choose?
When choosing your glasses, the thinning index is of prime importance. The higher the value, the thinner the lens.
Standard (index 1.5) | Thin (index 1.6) | Extremely thin (index 1.67) |
Recommended for low corrections: from –1.75 to 0.00 or from 0.00 to +1.75. |
Highly recommended for medium corrections: from –3.75 to –2.00 or from +2.00 to +3.75. |
Recommended for strong corrections: below –4.00 or above +4.00. |
The size and type of frame will also affect the thickness of your lenses: the ideal pair of glasses is the perfect compromise between visual comfort and your chosen frame and lens thinning.
For certain types of frames, it is preferable to choose a thin lens.
