Near vision Test
Near vision acuity determines the ability of both eyes to distinguish every detail at close range. If you find it difficult to read small print and need to stretch out your arms to read your newspaper or text messages on your phone, this may be a clear sign of presbyopia. This very common disorder, which is linked to the natural ageing of the eye, can be easily corrected. This online test is the first step. Since it has no medical value, you will subsequently need to make an appointment with your Visilab optician.
How to carry out the test
The online near vision test, in the form of a short 5-line text, is very simple and quick to carry out. As you read, the size of the letters decreases until they barely reach 1 mm.
How does it work? Position yourself 35 cm away from your screen and read the text, alternately masking your left eye and then your right eye. Each eye often has its own visual defects and weaknesses. Thus, do not be surprised if your eyes do not perceive the text with the same accuracy. Visual acuity at close range can vary from eye to eye.
Please note that the display settings of your screen may prevent you from completing the test in optimum conditions. Make sure that the brightness and contrast are adjusted automatically by your computer. If you have any doubts concerning the size of the page being displayed, do not hesitate to print out the test.
You can also take a more accurate test in your Visilab store.
Test results
How do you interpret your results?
As we get older, the lens of the eye becomes less elastic. Reading a text up close without stretching out your arms becomes a real uphill battle.
If you are unable to read the whole text and you need to concentrate or move backwards to see it less blurred, your near vision may be failing.
If it takes a bit of effort to read the final words on the last line of the text, there is no cause for concern. The presence of presbyopia is more evident than that.
It is impossible to interpret the results of an online near vision test with precision and certainty. Indeed, it does not fulfil the conditions of a true ophthalmological examination and it cannot replace professional advice.
Do you need to make an appointment?
Are you in any doubt about the results of the near vision test? Only a professional will be able to confirm or disprove the findings by giving you a full eye examination. Find your nearest Visilab store and make an appointment with an optician. After testing your vision, they will be able to guide you towards a suitable correction.
Presbyopia does not necessarily affect distance vision, but it does make near vision difficult. It is a common complaint from the age of 40, and it is most often treated by prescribing progressive lenses.
