Stereophonic equipment

Our hearing is naturally stereophonic, which means that our perception of sound is the same in each of our two ears. This allows us to understand speech in noisy environments and precisely locate the source of sounds.
These are coded into electrical impulses by our two internal ears and transmitted to the brain to restore the soundscape, rich in all its elements and all its nuances. If part of the information is missing, because of hearing loss affecting one of the two ears, our entire sound environment is impoverished. As the sound is then perceived with less depth, it appears less natural to us.
Advantages of stereophony
Stereophonic hearing is an advantage that we owe to evolution and which allows us to adapt as best as possible to the different situations that we are required to experience and share: to communicate satisfactorily and to have fruitful interactions with others, discriminate the sounds that interest us in a noisy environment, become aware of a risk, even a danger, and react immediately, or simply listen to our favourite music.
Bilateral hearing loss
In the case of bilateral hearing loss (on both sides), it is proven that fitting both ears is necessary. Indeed, just as our two eyes are corrected by a pair of glasses and not by a monocle, it is recommended to equip our two ears in order to restore stereophony to regain satisfactory hearing quality.
Correcting the hearing in each ear and balancing their perception helps restore natural hearing balance: this is essential to ensure optimal listening comfort.
Unilateral hearing loss
In the case of unilateral hearing loss, which affects only one of our two ears, we may be tempted to believe that the functional ear is enough to maintain satisfactory hearing. However, although it is possible to hear with only one ear, we nevertheless lose all the benefits of stereophonic hearing mentioned above. However, to communicate fluidly, perceive danger or enjoy a musical program, this is really not a luxury!
This is why it is so important to overcome hearing loss that only affects one of our two ears, whatever the origin, by choosing to get fitted. The hearing loss can be caused by a pathology, an accident or the natural ageing of the ear.
