Eye tests for driving licenses: why and for whom?
Surprisingly, one in five drivers has an uncorrected visual defect. Visual problems have implications when driving. If you are applying for a driving licence, a specific eye test, which can only be performed by authorised opticians, will enable you to take the first steps without danger.
This test will only take 10 minutes and cost you CHF 20.00. You will need to bring your identity card, your completed learner driver document and your glasses or contact lenses, if applicable.
Is an eye examination compulsory before taking a driving test?
Ready to get behind the wheel? Before you start learning to drive, remember to have your eyes tested! New Swiss drivers and holders of a foreign licence that needs to be exchanged must take this very short test.
According to the decree dated 8 December 2015, “all applicants for a driving licence must undergo appropriate tests to ensure that their visual acuity is compatible with driving motor vehicles”.
This excerpt lists several key points that must be checked: visual acuity, visual field and eye mobility. Optimal vision is essential for safe driving.
What about people who wear glasses?
All candidates are on the same footing when they take their driving test. Do you wear glasses? Do you have a brand-new pair of glasses that is perfectly adapted to your eyesight? The driving licence eye test is still compulsory. It is a quick and complete check-up to ensure that there are no additional defects that could affect your vision. The aim is not to prevent you from getting behind the wheel, but to ensure that your visual acuity is compatible with the demands of driving.
If this is not the case, a wide variety of solutions are available, such as adapting your glasses.
