Ultraviolet light: a danger to our eyes
Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that are harmful to the eyes. The cornea and the lens filter some of the UV radiation that would otherwise reach the retina. The eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows also play a protective role. Yet, without additional protection, UV rays are a danger to eye health.
Perfect eye protection: sunglasses purchased from an optician
For the best protection against ultraviolet rays, it is vital to wear high-quality sunglasses with a UV protection factor (UV-400) bearing the CE mark. This label, visible on the inside of the temple, certifies that the glasses meet the minimum quality requirements in force in the European Union. In addition, fit is an important factor: sunglasses should cover the entire eye, including the eyebrows. Slightly curved glasses with side coverage guarantee optimal protection. UV-filtered contact lenses – enough protection?
At Visilab, you will also find contact lenses with an integrated UV filter: a satisfactory solution for those sports for which glasses could be a hindrance. However, these contact lenses only protect the lens and pupil, not the rest of the eye, and they do not provide glare protection. They may be 90% effective against UVA rays, which are by far the most dangerous, but they do not guarantee total protection. Sunglasses are therefore necessary to fully protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays, especially in the mountains, where ultraviolet radiation increases by 10% every 1,000 meters.
